"open pack folder" opens folder but Minecraft hangs

When creating a new world, if I click the "open pack folder" button, the pack folder indeed opens (using gnome's file browser), but Minecraft stops responding to clicks or keyboard commands. Eventually I am told by the system that Minecraft has stopped responding.
