keyboard becomes unresponsive

when playing minecraft on my Macbook (creative or survival) the keyboard will occasionally become unresponsive. No keys will work, I can still look around, but I can not move, open the inventory, chat, or pause screen. This freeze can last between 10 seconds, up to 45+ seconds.
