Sometimes when unloading furnaces they stop smelting / use several items to smelt one item

When i go far away from a furnace, sometimes it stops adding smelted items or uses more then 1 input item for 1 output item

For example it might have 64 sand and come out with 32 glass, or 64 cobblestone and output 16 stone.
