2x2 spruce trees will not grow with any blocks above them

2x2 spruce trees will not grow with any blocks above them, regardless of the hight of the blocks above them. Even leaves will block the growth of the trees and not allow them to grow, even when using bone meal. This does not happen with a single sapling, only the 2x2 spruce saplings.
