Untamed Ocelots still despawn after having a lead attached

I tied three untamed Ocelots to a fence, excited with my catch I went fishing so that I could tame them, and came back to realize that all the Ocelots had despawned.

I had assumed leads would prevent mobs from despawning, I am unsure whether this is actually a bug.
