Sugarcane does not break when removing adjacent water source

I was creating my sugarcane farm, and I accidentally removed the water beside the sugarcane.instead of breaking, it stayed there, and it only dropped itself when I placed a block beside it to update it.

 

How to Reproduce:

1. place sugarcane beside a water source
2. Remove water source either by using a bucket or placing a block in its place
3. Effect is then reproduced, and the sugarcane is not updated
