Fish spawn rates are too high in rivers

So, I was just starting a new survival world in 20w19a and I set up camp next to a pond, I didn't have many food to I went in the pond to kill fish, but when I was killing fishes there was a lot of them. They would keep on spawning in the pond over and over and over. I got over 2 stacks of salmon.
