Item duplication when upgrading to netherite

Got a duplicate diamond shovel when upgrading to netherite.

details: brand new unenchanted diamond shovel used; shift-clicked the resulting netherite shovel to place it in my inventory, that's when another diamond shovel appeared.

haven't been able to recreate.
