When using the /give command in command blocks it will not recognise the item I'd if it has a : (for example colored wool)

What I expected to happen was...:

The command block should have given me cyan wool (I tried with other things as well)

What actually happened was...:

Steps to Reproduce:
1.type "give @p 35:9 1" in a command blockpm
2.apply redstone power to the command block
