End of Stream when trying to join server

I wanted to start a server for just me and my friend. We had only joined the server once or twice and then left it alone for a while. When I try to join using localhost all I get is an "end of stream" message. I added the server to my list and it gets a connection and everything, but no matter what I always get the "End of Stream". (And I haven't used any fireworks.)
