Hopper Issues

Items in hoppers won't correctly be filtered into brewing stands or furnaces if they are pointed sideways into them. e.g.. I had a hopper pointing into a brewing stand, the water bottles when in fine but the nether wart wouldn't go. I checked for any nearby redstone signals and there weren't any. I tested it off my building site away from other redstone and it still wouldn't work. Please fix!
