Stacked chests don't automatically join

 

What I expected to happen was...:
I stacked chests and I hoped they would join

What actually happened was...:
They didn't join and they just appear as a single chest, separated from one another

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Place 2 chests together
2. Place another 2 chests together on top of the other 2 chests and that's it

I could reproduce this bug in both survival and creative, at first I thought it was only in the nether but it happens on any dimension

Edit: it only happens if you click with the chest on the ground, if you click at the chest to it's side it does join them
