command writing problems

What I expected to happen was...

I writed in chat /fill ~~~~ and should take away one and set space between them ** 

so they would be like /fill ~ ~ ~ and earlier it worked so I toght it should work

What actually happened was...:

but when I should remove the last the whole ´´word`` (~~~~) removed and when I tried to ~1 and remove the ``1`` the ``~1´´ got  removed
