Launcher failes to connect to the internet

When attempting to log into the Minecraft client, the client fails to login and shows an error message saying "Sorry! Make sure you are online and try again". This is even after changing channel : "release" to channel : "beta" in the launcher_profiles.json in the .minecraft folder.
