I went through a nether portal, and no portal generated in the Nether.

So I was playing on the 1.16 snapshot. I built a Nether portal in the overworld, went through and... fell straight into lava. When I flew back up, there was no portal, and when I built one in the Nether to go back through, it generated a new portal some 200 blocks away.
