No Iron, no coal, no gold. What can I do?

I have the full Minecraft version, I bought it 1 week ago, and I downloaded it on to my computer. When I was playing my downloaded version I built a house near a lake, and there was coal, iron, gravel and stone around the house. Somehow I couldn't mine the stone, iron or coal. I could destroy it, but there was nothing to pick up. No stone no nothing. I could get gravel and flint, but nothing else. I was chopping trees perfectly fine, and killing animals well. Does anyone know what's wrong? I bought the full version but it won't pick up anything! Does anyone know the solution?
