Having a pet outside a boat and traveling a long distance in the boat causes the game to crash when the pet tries to teleport the long distance

I wanted to catch a snow fox and bring it to my home, which is far away separated by water from the snowy taiga. I got a fox and put it in a boat and prepared to sail. Without enough room in the boat for my cat, I expected it to teleport to me on the other side. When i finally got to the other side, it would not let me get out if my boat. I exited and saved but the save screen stayed up for about 20 minutes so I had to End Task in task manager. It reset my entire voyage and made me loose items i collected on the way, and this whole thing happened to me twice.
