Minecraft java edition launcher not allowing me to log in

I bought the game and when the launcher downloaded when i attempted to log in it claimed i was not online and couldn't log into the launcher leaving me with having spent the money for the game with no way to play it. i've uninstalled and reinstalled it several times without any changes.
