Creeper killed me in water. (all source blocks!)

I was normally playing Minecraft, and fighting mobs. Then there was that one creeper and it blew me up, and I died, although I was in water. I lost all my experience points. (I was in water pool that has only source blocks.) So that doesn't really make any sense. Please, could you fix this?
