Frame rate drops severely while sand falls

Whilst mining sand to clear out an ocean monument in my single-player survival world, I experience massive frame drops, from 160 to around 20 or even lower. I noticed that when I was mining the sand, my GPU usage went from 30% to around 10% utilization.
