Looking at certain blocks or in a direction causes lag

I just wanted to test the latest pre-release when I saw that when looking at a small water puddle the game felt a lot smoother than looking at the trees next to me. After opening F3 I noticed a big FPS difference which I want to report here. I don't know if this is a bug but the difference in FPS just by looking at a tree kind of makes me skeptical this isn't an issue.
