Blocks turn multi color when adding a block

I was in survival mode in a warm ocean biome. I was putting a block down when the entire area turned into multi color block with nether streaks through it. I then went into creative mode and when outside the shipwreck and placed blocks whenever a block was placed it would affect the adjacent area. See the attached photos for better details. I logged out and when I logged back in the blocks were normal.
