Harvesting honeycomb yields less than 3

wiki says shearing a full hive should give 3 honeycomb, i've gotten only 2 once and only 1 another time, on the same hive, tho others gave me 3. i saw the honeycombs kind of fly upwards instead of just dropping, so i think they may have gotten stuck inside the tree.
