Invalid format on primary monitor at minecraft start-up

Minecraft upon starting from the launcher gives a very vertically streched image on my primary monitor which then causes the monitor to go into an invalid format blackscreen. Alt-tab causes minecraft to revert to windowed mode thus temporarily solving the issue until a client restart. While it can be solved, it should not happen in the first place though.
