unable to craft iron golem or jackolanterns

What I expected to happen was...:
create an iron golem

What actually happened was...:
put down 4 iron blocks in T for and added pumpkin to top and blocks remained unchanged; also attempted to craft jakolantern in case regular pumpkin wasn't the trigger, unable to craft with pumpkin and torch at crafting table
