Leaves do not despawn near stripped logs

I placed down a number of saplings about 4 blocks from a wall of stripped logs. As the trees grew and I cut them down, most of the leaves did not despawn. After a few minutes, I broke all the saplings that were touching the wall of stripped logs and the leaves instantly started despawning.

Leaves should not remain if touching stripped wood, as that is not a tree at that point.
