No fall damage in survival?

I don't take any fall damage in my vanilla survival world when falling any distance. I fell from a 30 block high scaffolding and received no fall damage. I was not using feather falling. I closed and re opened Minecraft and the problem still persisted. This is the first instance of no fall damage I have experienced, and it is making me very uneasy.
