Game crashes often; leaves me in "low resolution"

Nothing in .minecraft/crash-reports (empty)

Minecraft set to run in a lower resolution than desktop. 854x480. Normal desktop is 1920x1080, so very difficult to file a report.

Crash seems random.  Usually when opening a chest.
