Cows jump appear to have jumped over fences

I had a cow farm that was fully fenced off and the fence gate was closed.
I then went to a cave system around 500 blocks away. I came back and i slept in a bed. The next morning i woke up to find that one of my cows had somehow "jumped" out of the enclosure. This is the second time that has happened.
