Minecraft is extremely laggy when I play, my Laptop has always been able to handle Minecraft smoothly but now it cant

Everything is very laggy and stuttering, it used to work fine but now does not. it seems to improve when I stay in one area for longer than 5 minutes, but not by much. I have turned down everything to the lowest settings to try and get things to go smoother but to no use
