almost no villagers sleep at night

very few if any villagers sleep at night even in peaceful mode. almost all villagers that go to bed leave bed after a few seconds. mob griefing is on. tried letting them work during the day a bit, and setting the time to a while before night, but neither worked. am using optifine, but tried without it to no effect.
