When I press create new world the screen freezes then stops responding. I am also unable to view crash report.

I have just brought Minecraft and have been unsuccessful in creating a new world. Whenever I press the button to create the world the screen freezes and Minecraft becomes unresponsive. After closing the game I see two buttons, one saying close and the other, view crash report, but only the close button works.
