Standing near a villager (doing nothing) depletes food bar

On a vanilla server.  Standing near a villager (in my case, 4 tiles away) doing no other operation that depletes food with result in a loss of food bar over time.

 

This occurred in a space where nothing has changed, except for the addition of a villager.  The space initially did not have this effect, but now that the villager is present, I need to eat every so often to keep from starving to death.

 

I've tested this in two different locations on the server, with different villagers, and experienced the same effect.
