Digging straight down caused jittering

I was standing on a tall dirt pole and I started digging straight down to get back down to the ground.  Part way down, I stopped falling and started jittering (camera was shaking, couldn't move) mid air.  I could not move.  I solved issue by replacing dirt under me, though I believe an ender pearl would have worked too.  Still, jittering isn't fun.
