Rain noise affected by particle setting

To increase performance, I usually play with particles: Off. But, when it rains, no sound is made. What is odd is that even though the rain particles are showing, no sound is made but when particles are on, it makes noise. I this because in code when a rain splash particle is made it plays the rain sound?
