Dragon can only sometimes be damaged with diamond sword

When you hit the enderdragon near the legs with a diamond sword, it displays the particles for when a mob is hit, but it does not flash red and its health does not decrease. I checked with F3+B and I was hitting within its hit box. When you hit the side of the body, it can take damage, but not from the back.
