Crashing after clicking "Play" from launcher

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro and I am having trouble launching Minecraft. I recently dowloaded Minecraft on this device, having played it on my iMac for many years (and it works fine there), and the launcher works fine. However, when I click there "play" button my whole screen goes black and I can't click anything. I can hear it running in the background, like the music, but I can't get it past the black screen.
