Villagers unable to pick up more than 4 stacks

Villagers seem to be unable to pick up more than 256 of any given items. One of my farmers had 5 stacks of beetroot seeds of which 3 were full with 64 items, 1 had 62 and one had 2. That farmer was unable to pick up any more. Same problem for the rest of them.
