Food dissapears while eating

I was eating a melon while in the middle of the ocean in a boat. While eating, I switched to my bread and as if I was in my inventory and holding left click and sliding across the screen, the melon split into two stacks and the bread disappeared. When I ate the melon it all turned into more bread than I had before, no changes since.
