Expert-Ranked Villager GUI bug

I have been trading with one farming villager up until it reached Expert level (aka the emerald badge) and now I can no longer trade with them. The GUI opens for a split second and then closes again. The villager is from a spruce village.

UPDATE: this only occurs when the composter is broken. when I replaced the composter, trading went back to normal. is this intentional or accidental?
