Unable to trade with villager (trade GUI flickers but kicks me out of trade)

A creeper destroyed an apprentice fletcher's work spot and I destroyed a barrel for a fisherman who was an apprentice and when I attempted to trade with them, the trade GUI just flickers for a second but prevents me from trading with them. It was fixed when I place a new work spot but I figured it shouldn't briefly flicker and not let me trade with them.
