Bone blocks can't be crafted

Both on the Realm and in single-player: I am unable to craft bone blocks with the crafting table, and bone blocks aren't in the recipe guide. I used the command to give myself a bone block and it said new recipes were available, so I then tried again - and it's still not in the crafting recipes nor can I manually craft the bone block.
