Loading chunks causes massive lag spike

Whenever I move around and load a significant amount of chunks, the game quickly gets quite choppy and frames drop to near single digits.

 

How to reproduce:

Go into creative, and fly around using the sprint flying feature (sprint before double-tapping space to enter creative flight), loading as many chunks as possible.
