Food will single-"punch" an iron door as opposed to eating the food

I was playing on hard, so I had an iron door. Hunger depleted, I run back to my house. Quickly, I grab some melon slices to kill my hunger, and I begin to head for the door, still eating. I run up to my iron door, facing it, with the cursor- but my character will not eat. He single-"punches" the door (as if to continually left click) instead of eat.

To Reproduce:
Setup a regular iron door. Leave it closed.
Hold some food in your hand (hunger level does not matter, full or not) and right click/hold right click.
