Double Chest Orientation

I placed this chest (the one on the right) facing from the side causing it to join well... like this. Upon opening, it split into two chests, still facing the same directions. I then destroyed the glitched chest and placed it again the same way, which now formed a double chest like normal. Unable to replicate again.
