Zombies falling through blocks

While mining underneath a ravine, I hear zombies growling above me, then all of a sudden they are next to me. There is solid stone and cobblestone in between. They have moved through the rock. It is too light for them to spawn below in the tunnel, and after killing them, it is quiet above.
