Villagers losing professions

I unfortunately don't have any photos, but what I have noticed is that villagers are losing their specified professions. I have observed that if a villager spends a certain duration in water (at least 1 block), the villager will lose their profession. This is extremely frustrating as all of my villagers have quit being farmers and almost all of them are weapon smiths. I literally can't trade any more of my produce
