When opening GUI with item in hand, GUI doesn't open

When playing on my survival world, I tried to use a crafting table, but it didn't work. I later tried using an empty hand, and then it worked. I tried the same thing with chests and furnaces, and had the same effect. Also, if you try to open a GUI with a block in hand, it will just place the block.
