Too many Iron Golems

Shortly after updating to 1.14, my village with 30-40 villagers went from 2 iron golems to over a hundred. They keep spawning as if there is no limit, and the sheer number is causing the game to lag or even occasionally crash. Need a way to limit/stop them from spawning, or the world will become unplayable. Killing them doesn't help, even if I kill half or more they shortly respawn to reach the same number and this destroys my karma with the villagers
