Fence became ghost fence when placed on chicken

Was placing fences in a line. The baby chicken walked through as I clicked. I clicked directly on chicken. The center of the fence did not appear but the arms did. These arms disappeared once I removed the connecting fence to the left. The fence was not used and I could walk through the space where the fence should have been placed
